THE OLD-FASHIONED UNITS OF MEASURE DO NOT EXIST ANYMORE…

The kilo revolution is coming. Starting from 2018 the constants of physics will define the system invented more than 60 years ago

The kilo changes its look, so as all other main measures. This has been decided by the people in charge that have met near Paris, during the conference of the Internation Institute Weight and Measures.

The goal of the meeting has been to redefine of the weight on the basis of the constants of physics, instead of abstract definitions. This has only been the preparatory meeting before the General Conference about weights and measures that will be held in November 2018. The new definitions will arrive in May 2019.

This is a real revolution of the international system of units of measure, founded more than 60 years ago: it will also change the Ampere, Kelvin and Mole. So, from now on, the four primary units will be defined by universal constants of physics and because of this will be reproducible universally. Thanks to this revoultion, the precise measure will be approachable by laboratories from all over the world.

Giovanni Mana, from Inrim, declares that: “It is very important, because some definitions, especially the one about kilo, are based on material artefacfts, instead of constant of physics, and these are not reliable considering a long term view”.
